Honoring Yom HaShoah with "The Crystal Beads: Lalka's Journey
Each year, Yom HaShoah—Holocaust Remembrance Day—gives us the opportunity to reflect on one of history’s darkest chapters and ensure that the stories of those who lived, suffered, and perished are never forgotten. For parents, educators, and caregivers, this day can also be a meaningful moment to introduce young readers to these important historical lessons in a thoughtful, age-appropriate way.
At Purple Butterfly Press, we believe in the power of stories to build empathy and understanding. That’s why we are proud to highlight The Crystal Beads: Lalka’s Journey by Pat Black-Gould. This poignant and beautifully illustrated book offers a gentle entry point for children to learn about the Holocaust through the lens of love, bravery, and spiritual strength. Inspired by true events, it serves not only as a tribute to those we remember but also as a bridge to teaching future generations why remembrance matters.
As you plan your Yom HaShoah observances, we invite you to explore the many resources surrounding this award-winning book and consider how it can support your efforts to teach history with heart, purpose, and hope.

The Crystal Beads, Lalka’s Journey, and Whitwell Middle School: A Story of Compassion and Caring about Others

The Crystal Beads, Lalka’s Journey tells of a young Jewish girl hidden in a Catholic convent during the Holocaust—a sacrifice her mother makes to keep her safe. While writing this story, I wondered how today’s children might connect with Lalka’s experience. I found inspiration in Whitwell Middle School’s Paper Clip Project, where students collected over eleven million paper clips to honor Holocaust victims, demonstrating that empathy and remembrance are timeless lessons for all.
